FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you want to know before you buy — and a few things you didn't know to ask.
SIZING & FIT
What size should I order? Exotic leather boots typically fit differently than everyday shoes or sneakers. However, Legado 1645 boots are designed to fit true to size. Fit may vary depending on your foot width and the toe style you choose. If you're unsure about sizing, feel free to contact us before placing your order — we'd rather help you get the perfect fit the first time than have you deal with a return.
Do your boots run narrow or wide? Our boots are built on a standard western last, which runs slightly narrower than an athletic shoe. If you have a wider foot, we recommend contacting us for a fitting recommendation before purchasing.
What's the difference between a square toe and a cutter toe? A square toe has a flat, broad front that sits flush across the toe box — roomier and more relaxed in fit. A cutter toe has a slightly angled, tapered front that gives the boot a sleeker silhouette. Neither is more comfortable than the other — it comes down to personal preference and the look you're going for.
Can I exchange for a different size? Yes. Please contact us within 14 days of receiving your order. Boots must be unworn and in original condition to qualify for an exchange. See our full return policy below for details.
LEATHER & MATERIALS
Is the ostrich leather real? Yes — every pair is made with genuine full quill ostrich leather. The quills you see are the natural follicles of the hide, left intact during the tanning process. This is not embossed or printed leather.
Is the python leather real? Yes. Our Don Pascual Matte Black is made with genuine python leather — not embossed cowhide, not synthetic. Real python scales, real texture, real character.
What is full quill ostrich and why does it matter? Full quill ostrich comes from the quill-covered portion of the ostrich hide — the area with the most texture and visual character. It is widely considered the pinnacle of exotic boot leather. It is softer than cowhide, more durable than it looks, naturally breathable, and develops a richer patina with every wear. A well-cared-for pair of Legado 1645 boots will outlast most other footwear you own.
Will the leather change over time? Yes — and that's a good thing. Both ostrich and python leather develop character and patina with wear. The leather softens, molds to your foot, and deepens in tone over time. This is a feature, not a flaw. It's what separates genuine exotic leather from synthetic alternatives.
CONSTRUCTION & QUALITY
What is Goodyear welt construction? Goodyear welt is the gold standard of boot construction. The upper, welt, and sole are stitched together in a way that allows the boot to be resoled multiple times without compromising the structure. This means your boots are not disposable — with proper care and occasional resoling, a Goodyear welt boot can last decades.
What are lemonwood pegs? Lemonwood pegs are small wooden pegs used to reinforce the insole and welt connection. They swell slightly with moisture from your foot over time, creating a tighter, more locked-in fit that gets better the more you wear them. It's an old-world construction technique that most modern boot manufacturers have abandoned. We haven't.
Where are your boots made? Every pair is handcrafted in León, Guanajuato, Mexico — widely regarded as the boot capital of Mexico and home to some of the most skilled exotic leather craftsmen in the world. Our boots are designed in Fort Worth, TX and built by master bootmakers with generations of tradition behind every stitch.
How long will my boots last? With proper care, decades. The combination of Goodyear welt construction, full exotic leather, and lemonwood peg reinforcement means these boots are built to be resoled, reconditioned, and worn for years. Many of our customers consider a pair of Legado 1645 boots a long-term investment rather than a purchase.
CARE & MAINTENANCE
How do I care for full quill ostrich boots?
- Wipe off dirt and dust with a soft dry cloth after each wear
- Apply a leather conditioner designed for exotic leathers every few months
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
- Use boot trees to maintain the shape when not in use
- Avoid prolonged exposure to water — if they get wet, let them dry naturally away from heat
How do I care for python boots?
- Wipe clean with a soft damp cloth — never scrub
- Apply a reptile leather conditioner to keep the scales supple
- Avoid bending or creasing the leather aggressively when not on your foot
- Store flat or with a boot tree to prevent curling of the scales
- Keep away from direct sunlight and heat sources which can dry and crack the scales
Can my boots be resoled? Yes. Goodyear welt construction is specifically designed to allow resoling. We recommend taking them to a reputable cobbler who has experience with western boots. A good resole can add years — sometimes decades — to the life of your boots.
